Cecil John Rhodes (British colonial pioneer and statesman)

Cecil John Rhodes was born in England on July 5, 1853. A sickly child, he was sent to South Africa for the warmer climate.

Under his command, a platoon of british mercenaries was commanded to anhialate any native Native Zimbabweans that opposed the annexing of their lands by the British Crown. (yr. 1883) 5000+ Zimbabweans were murdered in one afternoon. Each mercenary was awarded 1000 acres of African/Zimbabwean land for their loyalties towards this end.

The Rhodes Scholarship is awarded in memory of him.

Rhodes hoped that those who gained these benefits from Oxford and his scholarships would go on to improve the lot of humanity, and work towards maintaining peace between nations.
