Prime Minister of Georgia found dead

By Jenny Booth, Times Online

The Prime Minister of Georgia was found dead in a Tbilisi apartment this morning, apparently poisoned accidentally by a gas leak.

Zurab Zhvania's body was found in a separate room from that of his friend, Raul Yusupov, who also died, both seeming to have been killed by gas that leaked from a heating radiator, said Nano Merabishvili, Georgia's Interior Minister.

"This was apparently an accident," Merabishvili told reporters.

Mr Zhvania’s body was discovered in the apartment by his bodyguards, who broke down the door after the prime minister failed to respond to their telephone calls in the early hours.

The death of Mr Zhvania was described by analysts as a blow to President Mikhail Saakashvili and the economic reform effort in the unstable Caucasus country.
