Title: Monarchy...?
Post by: helena on October 12, 2005, 07:23:05 AM
Well, wrote this one when the news came that Benjamin Zephaniah had refused the OBE in 2003.

The Real Queen's Speech.

Tell me, what is the monarchy to you?
What history taught,
or the wind that national pride blew.

Wave in carriage of Cristmas speech,
Queen of England,
we no longer for pardon do beseech.

Yet with half a nation heaping affection,
another story waits to be told:
(though we seem to struggle with this 'minor' recollection),
of a people once stolen then left in the cold.

A crime buried deep in the nations psyche,
where we unthinkingly erase our past;
and then section society (from old habit),
into colour and caste.

It's not Elizabeth who I disrespect,
but rather the fancy notion;
that England is so grand and civilised,
while it drinks of the white wash potion.

Oh and the honour of what they would bestow,
for the whole world to see,
would be a kiss-ass medal, and OBE.

So Benjamin Zephaniah,
give thanx for the news the other day.
Perhaps we should pass the Queen some Kaya,
so she could meditate pon what you say.
