United Press Int'l | Health News Poll: Most minorities unhappy with U.S. WASHINGTON, July 12 (UPI) -- More than a third more black than white Americans are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, a poll released Monday indicates. A Gallup poll found that the vast majority of black respondents -- 83 percent -- reported they were unhappy with the way things are going, vs. 53 percent of non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics also were more likely to say they were dissatisfied, with 60 percent of respondents saying so. The survey found a steady increase in dissatisfaction among black and Hispanic respondents over the past four years, with a jump of 14 percent among Hispanic respondents since 2001. In 2001, 60 percent of black respondents said they were dissatisfied. Fifty-three percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with the way things were going in the country, up from 51 percent in 2003 and 46 percent in 2001. The survey's findings are based on telephone interviews conducted June 9-30 with 2,250 U.S. adults and has an error margin of 5 percentage points. Oversamples of blacks and Hispanics were weighted to reflect their proportion to the general population. -- Copyright 2004 by United Press International.
