Re: Change...What Change???
In Response To: Re: Change...What Change??? ()

"I can only say from my experience in the UK, that once you are vaguely African looking you are black."

I agree with this, but it must be 'refined' somewhat to reflect the complexities of colourism.

Europeans/whites are exculsive in their racial worldview/culture. Africans/Blacks are inclusive in our worldview/culture. Most other peoples fall somewhere in between the two extremes. This exclusivism on the part of Europeans means that although they will never view someone who is half 'other'(take your pick of race) as 'fully' one of their own, they will give and their is systemic prefferential treatment dolled out according to who's phenotype/colour is closest to theirs.

***I can give an example of a woman I heard years ago here when Oprah Winfrey was first shown on UK TV, that she didn't even know what race she was, when I corrected her calling her "coloured" I was told well "she's some form of Darkie".***

Just as an FYI, she's African(albeit a confused one).. Please don't call her 'coloured'... Let that term die just like darkie should... The only people I 'forgive' using that term are Southern Africans because folks under that designation were set up as a distinct class under apartheid...

"Honestly most white people I can tell you cannot even differentiate between the "Black/Brown" races. Indian, African it is all the same to many of them."

Most Europeans/whites have an exclusivist worldiew seeing folks as white or non-white, yes... But we were discussing colurism, which takes it to another level.

"I know it is a bit different in America."

Not really...
