Perhaps..........................

Perhaps those fools misunderstood the doctrines of human equality
When they held us for centuries in slavery
Perhaps those fools thought that their religion dictated that we must always be under the influence of colonialism
Perhaps those demagogues thought that the bible gave them the license to pervert the word of the almighty
and, kill, rob and plunder under the guise of being holy
Perhaps they thought that civilization meant the same thing as colonialism
Perhaps they think that the essence of life is money
That money is equated to being holy
Perhaps they think that black people are submissive
And no longer explosive now that we are tamed in the name of Jesus Christ
Perhaps they think that i'll forget that i'm black
and stay quietly and meekly in the back
Perhaps they think I will assimilate and be like  European-like
But no no, the hair of my daughter I will never straighten
Nor will i bleach my consciouness light to be acceptable in the oppressors sight.
Perhaps they think I am not prepared to fight and give my life for what I believe in................
But let them think again.

We should first show solidarity with each other. We are Africans. We are black. Our first priority is ourselves.

Good job Tyehimba, the subtlety of the word perhaps is continuously contradicted by the power in the rest of the poem, nice contrast.
