I think it may be a reference to John the Baptist. He was the "forerunner" of the SUN of God. Remember he was beheaded to make way for the New Age of Christ. Another way to look at the symbol is of the red star/sun eclipsing the moon.
"He must increase, but I must decrease"
The feast days of St. John the Baptist are always after the feast days of the SUN. June 24th(celebrated by Masons as their holiday) - 3 days after June 21(the SOLstice). Sept .24 - 3 days after the autumnal equinox. Dec. 27 - 2 days after the Sun's birthday, etc.
Remember, all this is astro-theology and the movements of the sun and moon dictate when the church celebrates.
