BUJUMBURA, Burundi -- United Nations workers say there are "many, many bodies of children, women and men" -- after refugees were attacked as they slept Friday night in the African country of Burundi.
Witnesses said at least 180 Congolese were shot and hacked to death in the raid on a U.N. refugee camp.
A local official told The Associated Press dozens of attackers screamed war cries as they rushed into the camp and set it on fire.
The camp sheltered Congolese ethnic Tutsi refugees who fled fighting in their troubled border province.
One worker described scores of burned bodies, and said, "The scene is absolutely horrific."
A U.N. mission director said the massacre will further complicate efforts to encourage Congolese refugees to return home.
