Who cares who wins the election in 2004??  Be it Bush, Dean or any of the other Democratic hopefuls is it really going to change anything?  Corruption is the very lifeblood of American political life.  How are two parties that are virtually identical going to change that???  What say you

Humbly,

You know...I used to feel that way too. The only problem with that way of thinking is that it makes people complacent and apathetic. It makes people feel powerless to do anything to affect change. And so they sit back idly and allow the powers that be to do whatever they want in their name.

True enough...most politicians are just as unscruplious as the other. It makes no never mind which ones to choose ..though some might stand clearer in the field then others.

No, politics is not the answer...but...being informed of what politicians are doing IS important. There are many avenues, ways and means to be heard. And there are those who DO make a difference.

Tracey,

Thank you for your response.  I agree that to assume nothing can be done to change America (and the rest of World) leads to apathy and stagnation and I also agree that there are many people who DO make a difference.  The intention of my question was to suggest that perhaps American politics is a game that bears no fruit and whose only winners are the wealthy and powerful.
I agree with you that it is important to know what our politicians are up to and to deny any evil they carry out in "the peoples best interest".  My question to you then would be what method would you use to bring about positive change?  If not politics, then.......

Not apathetic, just frustrated

People can become well-informed and tell the truth.

They can make a conscious effort to study history and understand what the rise of the West has meant and continues to mean for the rest of the world, and become able to articualte that for others. It is very important now for us to be able to describe the problem.

They can develop themselves and demonstrate a better example.

White Americans benefit directly from the system just the way it is. It is not possible for us under these circumstances to opt out and say 'hey it's not on me.' It is whether we like it or not. So anything we can do from our best is the thing to do.

It would be a sad thing to think that our lives could never amount to anything, or that we could never have the power to change anything. Thanks be there are many things we can do to cultivate the power within.. cause that's where it first starts.

If we do not take the time to learn about the world around us then it is we who are misinformed and gullible to believe whatever we are told. And the more gullible we are, the easier it is to control the mind.

I believe the powers that be would love nothing more than for us to feel powerless and become apathetic, and therebye  disengage from the process that turns the world. Let them handle it feeds right into their hands, as I think government would much rather prefer the people to distract their minds with all the plethora of nonsense and triviality that avails in abundance. This way we won't be paying attention to what they're doing in our names.

Am I advocating getting involved in government? Hardly...unless that is something that interests you and something you feel gravitated to contribute your time and energy to. There are many grassroots movements that are making a difference. Getting involved where you have a voice is a good place to start...and if you don't have one.. cultivate one. Learn, read, educate yourself and find where you feel led to get involved. Start from the ground up. All these forums here share in a wealth of information to better assist ones to learn and know more.

We now live in the age of information...ignorance is no longer a viable plea.
